Collage Forms
I am interested in making work that looks outside itself to reference situations in the world beyond considerations of technique, construction, and craft. By creating custom decals, I am able to use images as shorthand and adopt their valence, circulation, and various meanings to use in my work. I select imagery for this series and in other works that carries personal significance at the same time it provides a screen for the viewer to project and interpret their own meanings and associations.
The stacked constructions, visible connections, and imperfections on each piece reference masculine, abstract expressionist clay works. Rather than being singular statements of identity, my form and surface is taken over by stream-of-consciousness interruptions that complicate the viewer’s relationship to me—the artist—and to themselves, providing a distinctly queer rejoinder to that historical root.
